Dr. Dennis P. Tarnow is Clinical Professor of Periodontology and Director of Implant Education at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, a post he has held since 2010. He previously served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry.
He holds certificates in Periodontics (1976) and Prosthodontics (1978) from NYU, following a DDS earned there in 1972, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He maintains a private multispecialty interdisciplinary practice in New York City focused on periodontal-prosthodontic and implant care, and was part of the first team of clinicians trained directly by Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark in 1982.
He has published more than 250 articles on periodontal-prosthodontics and implant dentistry and co-authored four textbooks, including The Single Tooth Implant and Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry, and has lectured in more than forty-five countries. He serves as section editor for two peer-reviewed dental journals and sits on the editorial boards of ten others.
His honors include the 2023 Nobel Biocare Branemark Osseointegration Award from the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Periodontology's Master Clinician Award, the Charles L. Pincus/Ronald E. Goldman Lifetime Achievement Award (2019), the William J. Gies Award (2005), and the American College of Prosthodontists Distinguished Lecturer Award (2015), alongside NYU's Outstanding Teacher of the Year honor.
