BOPT is a prosthetic technique using vertical tooth preparation without a finishing line to shape and stabilize peri-coronal soft tissues, replicating crown contour and influencing gingival thickness and position.
BOPT, the Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique, is a prosthetic concept built around vertical preparation of the tooth, without a defined finishing line. The approach is grounded in the concept of biologic width, sometimes described as the biologic polygon, the three dimensional space comprising the connective tissue attachment, epithelial attachment, and sulcus.
By preparing the tooth vertically rather than with a horizontal shoulder or chamfer, and by using a sequence of provisional restorations to guide the healing of the surrounding soft tissue, the technique allows the clinician to shape and stabilize the peri-coronal gingiva. The emergence profile is built up gradually with the provisionals before the definitive restoration is placed.
This process aims to replicate the architecture of the natural crown and to positively influence the thickness and position of the gingival margin over time, supporting both function and esthetics in restorations on periodontally healthy teeth.
